Interview with Eve Vaughn

Eve: Hi Kally, thanks for agreeing to this interview

Kally: Hey, Sweetie! Thank you so much for having me here.

Eve: No problem! I've been dying to interview you for a while now. So tell us a little about yourself.

Kally: Oh dear. People probably know too much about me as it is. I'm the baby of my family. Had a good, normal childhood. Still friends with my sisters. Love my parents. Wanted to be a CEO of a F500 company when I grew up. Alex P Keaton was close to my heart. I have been incredibly blessed with great opportunity throughout my life. I've worked for paupers and princes, literally. Hmmm. I don't know what people want to know. Here, how about this? I have had every single hair color but black. I've never worn color contacts, though I've considered it and I still have three crowns I have won that are sitting in my closet. How's that for insider information?

Eve: Well uh..that was a lot, but I appreciate the extra stuff. You're stuff is great and pretty funny, while maintaining a level of hotness that's just right. Is humor your favorite genre to write?

Kally: Aww. I might forever quote you on that. LOL. I love humor, but I never set out to be funny - well in the stuff that has been published. I am working on some chick-lit/romantic comedy stuff, but. Anyway, humor has always been really important to me. I often, okay, too much, reflexively use humor as a defense or coping. So, I guess it was inevitable that it would show up some in my writing. All of my stories have some element of action, humor, and hope eternal in them. I guess that means, yes?

Eve: And you do it very well. Could you tell the readers what your latest project is and who'll be publishing it with?

Kally: Just finished and anthology project with Phaze. It's about the Greek mythology - the sisters of Fate. I got to be my favorite, Atropos - Death. I am really excited about it. Worked with Melissa Schroeder, Kara Fey, and Rena Marks. I am, or I should be J working on my NCP edits for my No Neutral Ground, book I Such As These Trilogy. I can't pick a favorite among my books, but if I were forced to, this series means the most to me. Oh! I forget things so easily. You're right. Bound By Dreams, the second in my sweet historical series is coming out next year too. It's kinda a sweet RS. Historical too boot!

Eve: Oh wow! That sounds awesome. I can't wait to read them. What other authors inspire you?

Kally: Over the years I have been so lucky to be surrounded by other authors whom I admire and respect. All you gals from Sexual Chocolate mean a lot to me. My sisters at CRW and RBL. But if I had to break it down to when I started, the five most influential from reading and from meeting and getting me involved in writing were: Kat Martin, Sharon Mignerey, Julie Garwood, Kathrine Kingsley, and Amanda Quick.

Eve: Awww. (wiping a tear from the corner of my eye) If you weren't a writer, what do you think you'd do instead?

Kally: You know, huh? I have several degrees. Not important ones. Lots of certifications, but nothing I can do as a real career. My migraines suck so bad and I still don't know when they are coming or how bad they will be. It makes life a challenge some times. I'd like to think if I had to do something else, I'd make the best of it. But I love what I am doing now.

Eve: When did you decided you wanted to write?

Kally: I think I might have told you the story before. I was dealing with a lot of pain and some depression about all the medical testing and treatment options after my auto accidents. This particular period in time was really difficult and I don't remember doing much other than going to the doctors and reading. Reading I could do at any time, day or night. I could do it for five minutes or twenty. If it hurt too bad I could stop mid-sentence and come back to the book. I didn't have TiVo. You certainly can't stop crunching payroll numbers and just walk off until you have a break in the pain. Anyway, ah. Reading was my escape. I couldn't go anywhere, really, but in books, I could go anywhere. I could be someone else, somewhere else. I read everything, but romance novels in particular filled a need because they were all about hope. You read it and knew there would be a happily ever after. You knew that couple could work it out, they would tough it out through the hard times. It inspired me. And one night while I was reading - not at all knocking the author, she is one of my favorites - but I thought, 'I could do this'. I went to take a bath and the little el nino brewed in my brain some more and while I was saving, the poem at the start of that book I was talking about No Neutral Ground (at the time it was called something else) came to mind. I got out of the tub, one leg shaved, sat down and wrote the first part of that book. Told my folks about it the next day. They were both really supportive. I knew I couldn't do it alone. I knew nothing. So I joined RWA and my local chapter.the rest is history. TMI?

Eve: I thought I was the queen of TMI, but I love your answers! Keep them coming. What don't you like about writing?

Kally: I cannot type as fast as my brain thinks it works.

Eve: I totally know what you mean. What would you like to get out of your writing?

Kally: My stories, to me, are all cathartic in some fashion. They entertain me. I would like to think that they touch other people. That others get that same sense of hope and entertainment that drew me to writing and reading. I want to share these people's (in my stories) lives with others.

Eve: Where can readers find your books?

Kally: Phaze, New Concepts Publishing, Samhain Publishing, Loose Id, Vintage Romance Publishing, Amazon Barnes & Noble, www.bam.com I think :-)

Eve: And your website?

Kally: www.kallyjosurbeck.com I have a myspace page www.myspace.com/kjwrite and my yahoogroup.

Eve: Now for the fun question!

Kally: YEAH! You're going to ask about my compulsive Television watching or my super cool friends?

Eve: You won't get off that easy. What kind of surprises can we expect at RT in the 07? Loved that Dodgeball shirt by the way.

Kally: Ahh the Dodgeball shirt. There are so many more where that came from. Actually went on a couple dates with this guy who found it necessary to comment on the fact that women should not have so many saying t-shirts. He said, your closet's a guys heaven. I thought, oh, how sweet. No. He meant guys should have my sweatshirts, hoodies, and t-shirts and I should get some girlie clothes. We have not been out again. I think the last time I saw him I was wearing my 'I do my own stunts' tee. Ok RT. Well. There is so much. :::Rubbing hands together::: Dude, I am so going to wear your readers out. They will never talk to me again. We have the Sexual Chocolate's Lick That Craving panel/workshop thing. That will be a rockin' time. You, me, Mel, Liz, Lena, Maggie, and Bev. Not just for the chocolate, and our superb companionship, but the people that come to it can get our books signed without waiting in those horribly long lines at the official booksigning. Also, Mel and I are having our Invite Only party again (in a secret location) so whoever wants to go, shoot an email and we'll hook you up. I'm not sure how the hair will be this year. As I said, I have not gone black yet. I'd like to drop a few pounds. Maybe I'll dress up more. But you know there will be dancing! Hell yeah! And I have so been working on my breakin' moves. If your readers don't know about the white man dancing, you have to tell them.

Eve: *VBG* Sure hope Eve's name is on that list for the secret party. Favorite name for male genitalia?

Kally: That I like to use? ROTFLMAO In my writing, of course. Or that makes me laugh when I read it? I think if I'm writing it, it's probably cock or dick. Neither offends me. The one that got me was his flag staff. Ruined the scene.

Eve: Flagstaff? Eww. Favorite word for female genitalia?

Kally: I guess it depends on the genre, time frame, that kinda stuff. I don't really like the word cunt, personally. It's always had negative connotations where I grew up. Though I've seen it used well. Pussy usually makes me have a Beavis and Butthead moment. My favorite term for it is slit. I know. I know. OH! Another word I like and I have used.not particularly in a flattering way. If the chick lit comes out, you'll see it. But gash. HA. I honestly don't know. Hadn't thought about it too much, I suppose.

Eve: Hmmm, that answer may have been a cop out but nice save. Out of these three choices, which man would you screw, which man would you marry, and which one would you kill: Brad Pitt, Colin Ferrell, and Denzel Washington.

Kally: No three way, huh?

Eve: Yeah, ain't I a biatch?

Kally: Ok - Kill Brad Pitt. He and his rat nose can go, though he might be a good fuck. After Angelina, I'm sure I'd suffer by comparison. Though you put in him River Runs Through it, Legends of The Fall, or Troy.I might over look the nose and his past.

Screw Colin Ferrell. I bet that boy could make me scream. And I have no doubt I would suffer by comparison, but I doubt he'd care. There have been so many, there is no comparison any more. Colin! Call me!

And I'd marry Denzel. I know he's taken and I'd have to be an adulterer. That makes me sad. Still. Can you think of how awesome it would be to lay with him on a Sunday morning with fresh crisp sheets and just the sounds of traffic? Ahhhhh.

Eve: Grrr Denzel is mine! Back off blondie! If you could kill anyone and get away with it, do you have a person in mind and would you do it?

Kally: If I could kill one person? :::rubbing chin::: No. I bet I could if it came down to a me or them I could, but not to just set out on my own to do it. Severe beat downs? Now, that I might consider. Gentlemen, welcome to Fight Club.

Eve: Is it really the motion of the ocean or did someone with a small penis make that up to feel better about themselves?

Kally: It's an old nautical term. Yeah? You didn't know? It's because the motion of the ocean lulled the woman to sleep and the man told everyone before she woke up that it was good.

Eve: Hmm, I always wondered where that term came from. What's grosser on a guy? Speedoes or back hair?

Kally: Holy crap, back hair! And it spreads. At least the speedo goes away.

Eve: Who's your secret obsession?

Kally: Oh, I like it! But if I tell it won't really be a secret anymore. I am torn! There are a lot of people I find fascinating, but obsession..?What about you?

Eve: My secret obsession is Colin Firth. I love that man and one day plan on stalking him. Okay, back to the questions, Am I the only one who wonders what happened to the Funky Bunch?

Kally: OMG You remember! Dude. I'd have done Marky Mark in a minute. I would still do the arteest Mr Walberg, but.

Eve: I wouldn't. He left the Funky Bunch in the dust and for that I can't forgive him. He's all yours. Who would you rather have as a mom, Madonna or Angelina Jolie?

Kally: That is a tough call, but I would rather have Madonna, err Ruth, eerr.

Eve: Aww but Angie is into knife play. Oh well, guess that's why they make ice cream in different flavors.

Thank you for allowing me to interview, before you go, could you please tell us how we can contact you?

Kally: Contact me any time @ ksurbeck@yahoo.com I've loved it. This, I can say, is the best interview ever. Thanks for having me and making me so welcomed!
