Excerpt:
Through the veil she was an elemental manipulator. She could call the wind, summon water, and play with sand. Air was a friend she knew by name that could carry her from one locale to the next with a chat from her lips or intent from her heart. Water, much the same, except water enfolded, embraced, gave life. Air more often stole it.

Here, in her prison, she still heard the wind and the water. They kept her company.

The water soothed her, told her it was not as far away as it seemed. The ocean had even communicated to the moat through an unseen spillway. It forced the eels to remain calm. Though their freakish screams still startled Tannah from dazed sleep on a regular basis, they had not once bothered her. Their slick black scales gleamed with a bluish hue as they cut through the stagnant water with knifelike precision.

The winds sought out hidden fissures in the walls, working thier way through breaks to bring her bursts of fresh air.

They did all of this for her, and yet she could not respond. She could not express her gratitude. Not beyond the prayers of thanks said daily and the joy in her heart.

Her prayers were heard. She knew they were because the gods in their infinite wisdom had seen fit to allow her new opportunity through this most unfortunate circumstance. Advancement through all things, it was one of the core believes of her mother. This was nothing different, just harder to discern, maybe. Where before, the world was about her, it had morphed into something larger. It was now all about everyone else, the animals, the insects, and the people, even the gods. She now sensed all things, felt their thoughts, anticipated their movements. The disturbance of a halted breath rippled across the universe, and she could now see it. She had not yet found a way to control her new gifts, to use them, but Tannah was certain that with time and patience she would.

Time she had aplenty.

The air rippled again. Movement. A presence. Something evil was near, but she was confused. She sensed love and warmth, too, something she had not felt since.

Closing her eyes, she let the waves of disturbance wash over her body. Obsidian eyes with laugher lines at the edges stared back at her through her fluttering lids. When had he come? Startled, she gasped. He did, too. As if in a dream, she heard something filled with liquid crash down onto wood.

"Go away," she whispered, opening her eyes and scanning the cell. It wasn't safe to speak with him. She knew something evil was there. The pounding in her heart would betray them both and she would not sacrifice him. The evil was a threat, close, dangerous.

But so was he.

Her heart skipped a beat with undue happiness. He was real. She'd always hoped, prayed that he was, but now she knew for certain. This wasn't the Dream World. She hadn't slept in days. It could be a hallucination, but if she was imagining him, it certainly felt divine. She breathed deeply, grasping at the olfactory sensation of his scent. He was real. Real.

Reviews:
WHISPERED PROMISES continues Ms. Surbeck's Yadderwal series and lives up to the promise of the first book. This action-packed fantasy romance has a great hero and a strong heroine, and I felt myself feeling a little sorry for the villain. The villain was not totally evil, but compelled to evil against his better urges. Ms. Surbeck has created a great series, which I highly recommend.

Whispered Promise: Book II Yadderwal Balance is an exceptional continuation to the world readers first visited in Sudden Fall. The strength of this story enables it to be read as a single work, yet once readers experience this fantasy realm, they will be hard pressed to resist any book in this series. Kally Jo Surbeck melds the existent realities of the Dream World, Yadderwal, and the Ether World into a creation that flows with imagery and feeling. As Fionn sets off to save Tannah, the author treats readers to elegant prose and beautiful imagery. If it is possible to make characters live through words, Kally has done so. The words seem to flow not as written text for the reader, but as a recounting of another place and time as seen and felt by the main characters. So easily does she draw you into the world she has created that this reader lost all track of time. This is a poignant, romantic tale, that sees Fionn and Tannah overcoming much in their quest to not only survive but to thrive and thwart those that would destroy the purest part of us all. Ms. Surbeck does well in balancing the darker facets of the plot with lighter moments and sparks of romantic hope that blends to offer readers a work that is definitely a recommended read. Hopefully we will be seeing more from this series.

Coffee Time Romance

Ms. Surbeck takes the reader on another delightful journey of love in her fabulous Yadderwal. Whispered Promise introduces one to new characters as marvelously fascinating as those from Sudden Fall who are revisited. She expands the worlds of Yadderwal to include a third and maintains the feeling of a complete whole as this new facet is introduced and explored.

Prepare yourself to laugh and cry as your run the gamut of emotions from despair to utter joy. With this offering, Ms. Surbeck has solidified her position as a true talent in the romantic fantasy genre. Congratulations on creating a sequel worthy of being hidden in my secret stash of "written addictions" along with its predecessor.
